Students

  • The total number of students is 15,991, including 12,897 higher education students (intramurals: 7,317; extramurals: 5,481; part-time students: 99) and 2,877 vocational education students (intramurals: 2,644; extramurals: 233)
  • 4,049 students graduated in 2015/2016.
  • 1,997 full-time students graduated in 2016. They include 1,332 higher education students and 665 vocational education students.
  • 80% of graduates were able to find jobs, 16% undertook further study.
  • Student distribution by sex: approx. 60% of male students to approx. 40% of female students

Scientific Research

  • In 2016 the University carried out 78 research projects with the total funding of 250,902.2 thousand Roubles.
  • Research and Development Institute for Nanosteels is a part of NMSTU which organizes and conducts basic and applied research in the field of nanomaterials and nanosteels.
  • Research and Development Institute for Metallurgical Technologies and Metal Forming promotes innovative research in steel making through the creation of cutting-edge steel grades and innovative metallurgical technologies.
  • Laboratory for testing buildings and structures for reliability and durability. It carries out inspections and does the assessment of buildings and structures, analyses the stress-strain state and provides reinforcement and rebuilding solutions.
  • The Microtopography Research and Development Centre is engaged in the development of technologies for producing automotive sheet steel with controlled surface microtopography, as well as work roll machining technologies.
  • Research and Development Institute for Historical Anthropology and Philology develops cross-disciplinary projects in the area of historical anthropology and philology (classical archeology, history, linguistics, literature, Russian and foreign culture).

Academic features

  • Due to the implementation of three Tempus projects the University enhanced its programmes in materials science, design, and environment.
  • NMSTU students regularly go on internships provided by partner organisations. They include such industry leaders as MMK, Danieli and others.
  • The following educational project is being implemented as part of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet programme: European best practices of youth entrepreneurship and possibility of their implementation in Russia.

  • The University campus encompasses 13 dormitories and extensive facilities, which include sports facilities, canteens, and entertainment centres.

Athletics

  • The Student Sports Club “Stalnye Serdtsa” (or, “Steel Hearts”): One of the leading youth sports organisations promoting ice-hockey, basketball, tennis, volleyball, power lifting, athletics, judo and rowing and canoeing.
  • The Ice-Hockey Club “Stalnye Lisy” (or, “Steel Foxes”) regularly holds international and regional championships.
  • The ASB basketball team
  • The University includes facilities for sportsmen with disabilities (or, deaf athletes) who qualified for the Russian national team

Extracurriculars

  • More than 50 student organizations covering a range of interests: martial arts, outdoor activities, community tutoring, literary magazines, theater and dance troupes, political organizations, and identity-based groups
  • New groups are formed constantly in response to student interest.
